A father sued his daughter for spending too much time in college. Surprisingly, he won the lawsuit.
Abroad, it is not necessarily strange to ask your children for money back because they did not do well at school. But suing them seems at least bizarre.
An Austrian man was very upset that his daughter spent a few extra semesters in college.
The young woman, a student at the Faculty of Architecture in Vienna, was financially supported by her father. However, after he saw that he did not intend to finish his studies in 8 semesters, he took action. His daughter spent 13 semesters in college, 5 more than those set in the school curriculum, so he sued her for recovering the money.
The man lost the initial lawsuits. However, the Austrian Supreme Court ruled in his favor. The magistrates decided that he was obliged to financially support his daughter for only 10 semesters.
So the court forced the young student to pay her father the amount of 24,000 euros, the equivalent of 3 semesters of study. As if that wasn’t enough, she still has to pay another 8,000 euros in court costs.
The local press in Austria says that this situation has been reached due to poor communication between parents and children.
This is not an isolated case. The same law firm involved in the lawsuit has six other similar cases pending in which children are sued to recover their study money.
