A photojournalist spent nearly two weeks in a Native American tribe – what he saw there amazed him

You’ve probably seen documentaries or movies about jungle life, tribes where people live by simple rules, like hunting or being hunted, where everything is much simpler than the big cities. If you find it a tempting scenario, the fact that you are disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of the city, you should know that someone has already done this and spent 12 days in an Amazon tribe. If you’re thinking of doing the same thing, you need to learn something about jungle life, and Pete Oxe, the daring British photojournalist, is the perfect man for it.

Pete Oxe wanted to know more about the daily life of the natives of the Amazon, about their customs and traditions. Even though this tribe, called the Guarani tribe, is reluctant when it comes to foreigners, the leadership allowed them to live there for 12 days. The photojournalist felt deeply honored for the opportunity and began to witness day to day life in the tribe. The things were quite simple: the men hunt and buy food and the necessities for the house where they live and the women take care of the children and the house.

From an early age, children are taught to climb trees and hunt using a long pipe with arrows that are greased with poison at the top. They spend hours hunting, sometimes having to sit in one position, motionless, for hours, to make sure the family waiting at the hut eats on that day. Among their favorite dishes are fruits, vegetables but also parrots, which are also used as pets, monkeys, and wild pigs.

The physiognomy of their fingers has changed and their soles became flat, so they can climb trees much more easily. The population is almost 4,500 people and they are very well organized, even if at first sight they do not seem so. They live near the Napo River, which is a river tributary to the Amazon with a length of almost 1500 kilometers.

The pictures taken by the brave cameraman are truly phenomenal, as if they show us a completely different world that does not belong to this earth. The Guarani’s adapted to the environment very well. After the experience in the jungle, the photographer, Pete Oxe, confessed that he felt very good, that he was welcomed warmly despite the fact that he was very different, and that he is always eager to discover people who are different from him.
