Lima is the second-largest desert city in the world, with a population of almost ten million, this city receives a paltry of 0.3 inches of rain each year. The coastal desert has a very long dry season and the cultures that lived in the past figured out how to fight against the thirst of water. In some areas, people still use 1,400 years old techniques to preserve the water from the rainfall in canals made of rock named “amunas”. These canals route the water to rocky or sandy zones, so the water gets stored in the soil diverting it to the mountainside so it can be available during the dry season. The population relies on just three rivers to provide water. More than that, there are many households with no running water, and people depend on private companies that provide potable water for residents.
After a recent drought in Peru, many families remained with not water resources and made them go look for water on other sides. We all know that where is water there is life.. but what happens where this vital element is gone? People suffered a lot, some died, but not only humans. Let’s think about the homeless animals too. The hopeless animal grabbed a bucket in his mouth and started wandering on the sidewalk, hoping to get some water poured inside. At some point, someone tries to pet him and you can clearly see in his cloudy eyes the sorrow and the thirst. He is struggling, looking for some extra drops of water to taste. Hopefully, the researchers found a way to fix the issue, but it took a while.
With a sad face and exhausted legs, the dog continues to go forward and back, hoping that someone will help him. Less he knows that the people have the same problem. Everybody turns around when he passes by with the bucket held tight in his teeth.
Local people helped the researchers locate more canals, perform water analysis and ultimately the situation got improved, but no fixed totally. Hopefully, soon there will be found a permanent fix for this situation because it’s so hard to imagine life without water. And as you can clearly see, not only humans are affected, animals too.
