The first hug of twins just 11 days old was immortalized in a photo that travels around the world. Even if at first sight the picture arouses a lot of emotion, very few really know the story behind this image.
Of the twins, named Mason and Hawk, only one was born healthy and the other underwent several surgeries due to a birth defect.
Little Hawk was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a rare condition that results in the incomplete development of the newborn’s diaphragm. After several surgeries, one night in the hospital, Mason, the healthy brother, was agitated and his mother could not calm him down in any way.
A nurse who was responsible for the case suggested to her mother to place the siblings next to each other, hoping that Mason would calm down.
