The Great Blue Hole is located in the middle of the Belize Reef. The place has a diameter of 305 meters and a depth of 120 meters.

This natural phenomenon is located in the Caribbean Sea, Mexico, about 100 kilometers from the city of Belize.

The Great Blue Hole is located in the center of the Lighthouse Reef and formed during the Quaternary Glaciation, when the sea level was much lower than it is today. Analyzes of stalactites formed around the Great Blue Hole show that it formed 153,000 years ago. When the water level began to rise, the former cave was filled with water.

The place became famous thanks to French researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau who first explored the great blue hole in 1971, then included it in the list of the top 10 places for diving.

Thus, Jacques Cousteau brought his ship, Calypso, into the area to discover the depth of the structure. The researcher’s investigations proved that it is a karstic, calcareous formation, formed before sea-level rise. The terraces of the cave are at depths of 21, 49 meters, and 91 meters. The initial depth of the Great Blue Hole was 151 meters.

Divers can see several species of reef fish here, such as the Caribbean reef shark.
