He saved the life of a baby when he was only 14 years old – 58 years later he received a phone call
We all like emotional stories, reunions full of happiness and sincere emotions, that kind of story in which after a long time, two people with a common past, even if it is a moment or a longer period, meet again, look at each other and they hug tightly, while thinking deeply about the long-gone moments. Most of us probably went through such experiences with very close relatives or friends. Due to certain circumstances, life takes us on other paths and we end up facing something that often happens to break even the strongest connections: distance. When he was just a 14-year-old teenager, Dave Hickman enjoyed every visit to his grandparents. Like any child, he waited for the holidays to be able to visit them and spend quality time with them and take part in activities, one of his favorites being hunting. His grandfather had extensive experience in this field and Dave had developed a passion for this activity. His grandfather is very happy to see that he has a reliable partner with him. One day, after a lot of planning, the two went hunting.
It was almost noon and the two had been in the woods for some time, looking for prey. At one point, Dave heard a noise. It was not strange to hear noises from time to time in the forest, but that sound had no place there. It was a child’s whimper. Dave orientated himself and went in search of the origin of the sound and after a while he found it.
That image got stuck in his mind, forever. A baby girl, wrapped in a piece of cloth, left in the middle of the forest in cold weather. It was the perfect snack for the beasts that lived in the woods. But fortunately, Dave showed up at the right time and, along with his grandfather, took the baby girl to the hospital. Her lips were purple, the soft skin was irritated and the baby was very agitated.
They made sure that the girl received the necessary care and then left, without asking for more details. Time passed and Dave could not get out of his mind that image in which the girl looked at him innocently, somehow knowing that he is her salvation. For more than half a century, Dave had been looking for that little girl, he wanted to know who she was, but in vain, he had never succeeded. At one point, he spoke with a friend of his, a police chief, to find out more information.
Just two weeks after he asked for help, former chief John Catey gave Dave a name and a phone number. They finally managed to get in touch.
