A man has been raising his daughter alone since his wife left him. One day, the little one got sick. Her illness was so severe that no doctor could cure her.
The man was able to do anything for his daughter to get well, but nevertheless, his efforts turned out to be in vain. The child died shortly after, and the father could not be comforted. He became very withdrawn and no longer spoke to any of his relatives. Nothing could restore his zest for life. One night, however, he had a strange dream.
He pretended to be in Heaven and witnessed something he had never seen before. Several angels wearing white robes hung in front of him. each angel had a lighted candle. At one point, the man noticed that one of the angels had the candle off. He looked better and noticed that his daughter was that angel.
Then he ran to her, took her in his arms, and stroked her hair, asking her why her candle is not lit:
“Daddy, they light it for me every time, but your tears extinguish it.”
The man woke up from a dream and understood the lesson. The effects were not long in coming. In one hour, he woke up all his friends, apologized to them, and promised to regain his zest for life, all so as not to extinguish his child’s candle.
