There was also a shadow at this party, despite the happiness: 10 years ago, Monique’s brother, Mikey, died in a car accident. In the pain of the next moment, the parents decided to donate his organs to save the life of a little girl.
Aubrey Reeves was only 8 years old when she received Mikey’s heart! Her body had already rejected two hearts by then, but she had not rejected his: the heart matched her body perfectly. She also received kidneys. Now the girl is 18 years old!
Although the donors are usually anonymous, 10 years later Aubrey’s personal details were sent by her parents, Mikey’s parents, to show them that their son had saved a life. Because of this, Mike’s parents invited the girl to Monique, his sister’s birthday. The parents confessed at the party: “The heart of Monique’s dead brother is in the center of this room, she is alive and living in the chest of this young girl”.
Monique, Aubrey and Monique’s mother hugged and cried, but in the end Monique was very happy to hear her brother’s heart beating. In a way, as the two girls later said, they felt like sisters from the first moment.
