Over the decades, researchers have discovered all sorts of strange creatures. But there are still many that remain a mystery. On a fishing trip, Jaime Rendon, from Mexico, felt a jerk in his fishing rod, so he pulled to see what it was, he had no idea he was going to pull out something incredible.
Jaime was with a group of fishermen near Los Cabos, off the coast of Mexico. The men present at the discovery declared him, as soon as they saw him, “Alien Fish”, with all their experience they had never seen anything like it. This strange fish had light skin, but that wasn’t his only weird trait.
Jaime says: “I was very surprised, but most of all I was scared of his eyes, they were so weird”.
When they looked more closely and realized what they had found, they could not believe it: it was a shark of a species that is known for its swollen belly, with a rare disease called leukemia, which makes all the pigment in the skin disappear. The swollen belly is a known defense mechanism, when they feel threatened by a predator, sharks swallow large amounts of water and a stomach bag swells, making it much harder for a predator to swallow.
