Caleb Howard was only 6 years old when an accident with a car that hit the front of the car he was in left him with head injuries and broken bones. His father, desperate, wasn’t sure how fast or if he would ever recover, so much was Caleb’s slow progress.
One day the doctors suggested that a dog named Colonel be placed next to the child to act as his therapy animal. The parents were desperate for solutions, so they agreed. The accident had already claimed the lives of two of his brothers and the mother who drove the car, only a miracle saved his sister, Rachel.
The boy was in a hospital bed, completely dependent on the machines, and the doctors gave him no chance of survival. His father donated part of an organ to him and only in this way could his life be saved, however, if something was not done urgently, he would be left with disabilities for life.
It was the therapist’s idea for this child to work with a dog as well, and now the doctor says he saw a connection in the two that he did not notice in the other patients. The two quickly became best friends. Caleb, who had little energy, became motivated once he met this wonderful animal.
The colonel helped him recover mentally and emotionally, and then the physical recovery came naturally. We invite you to watch a short video about the story of this boy who found a reason to fight for life in a special dog:
