According to the World Health Organization, there are around 50 million abortions per year in the world, and almost half of them are performed in unsafe conditions. If we convert that number to a daily rate, that would be around 125,000 abortions a day. The numbers are indeed shocking. In the United States, in 2016 there were around 620,000 abortions and 820,000 in 2017, calculated based on ages 15 to 44. Teenagers can get a bit unpredictable at some point, so that’s why parents must be careful when having important conversations with them, chats that can touch their feelings. At young ages, they can be a bit sensible. Melissa Ohden was just 14 years old when she found out the most unexpected news. She is the survivor of an abortion. Very young at age, the news shook her trust in the world and she changed a lot, developing bad habits, going out with bad “friends”. As she grew older, she thought more and more about her past and began to realize that she was a very lucky person, and that she needed to value life more. She was deeply indebted to a nurse who heard her crying, otherwise, she was dead now. Her mother didn’t know that her baby girl was actually alive. With help from the nurses, she survived and was adopted by a loving family.
36 years later, when she felt ready, Melissa decided that she must start searching for her natural mother. During her life, she did research and found out that her mother was forced to perform an abortion by her grandmother who didn’t agree with the birth. The reason? She doesn’t know why, maybe due to financial issues or simply because she considered that it’s not the right time, who knows? What she knew that her mother was somewhere out there.
Now Melissa has a wonderful relationship with her mother and she laid down all her experiences and thoughts on papers and released a book in which she explains about forgiveness.
